Bat House Dimensions - Expert Recommendations

June 07 2023 – Jessica Woodend

The first thing to consider when looking for a bat house is the size of the bat house.

Size is one of the most important features in a successful bat house. Merlin Tuttle, a renowned bat conservationist and expert, strongly recommends bat houses that are large enough to accommodate a substantial number of bats. Based on his extensive research and experience, he suggests constructing bat houses with a minimum height of 24 inches, a width of 16 inches, and a depth of at least 4 inches. These dimensions allow for ample space inside the bat house, providing a comfortable roosting environment for bats to rest, rear their young, and form colonies.

With the help of Merlin, we designed safe, sustainable, and stylish bat houses ranging in different sizes. Our single-chamber designs are the smallest recommended by experts, and meant to hold a smaller number of bats. While our Mammoth design is our largest and is great for established maternity colonies.

Single-chamber dimensions: 32.5" T x 19" W x 3" D

These dimensions may be slightly different depending on the design you choose.

Dual-chamber Bat House Dimensions: 36" T x 19" W x 4 3/4" D

These dimensions may be slightly different depending on the design you choose.
